Product Roundup 26.Q4.1

October’s CVAT Digest covers four releases: v2.78.0, v2.79.0, v2.80.0, and v2.81.0.

Highlights include:

  • Multi-object selection and batch editing.
  • Annotation export for audio projects.
  • More flexible replica job workflows.
  • Mask and polygon tracking directly in the browser.
  • Custom text prompts for SAM 3 multi-object segmentation.

Select and edit multiple annotation objects at once

Working with many objects no longer requires editing each one individually.

With the new Multi-object Selection feature, you can select several objects on the canvas or through the Objects sidebar and perform batch operations, including:

  • Move, copy, paste, and delete multiple objects.
  • Change labels and edit shared attributes for objects with the same label.
  • Group objects or adjust their layer order.
  • Lock, pin, hide, or change occlusion for selected objects.
  • Undo and redo batch operations.

You can also copy selections between video frames while preserving the objects’ relative positions, labels, and attributes.

This is particularly useful when annotating dense scenes or making repeated changes across multiple objects.

Export annotations from audio projects

Audio project annotations can now be exported in Generic TSV 1.0 format.

The export combines interval annotations into a single TSV file, including timestamps, labels, attributes, source filenames, and dataset subsets.

This allows you to transfer labeled audio intervals and transcription data into downstream processing and model training workflows without manually consolidating annotations from individual tasks.

The export contains annotations only, not the original audio recordings.

More flexible replica jobs for annotation quality workflows

Replica jobs are now managed independently from the consensus merge operation.

When creating a task, you can specify the number of Initial replicas, including a single replica. For supported 2D annotation jobs, consensus merging can be performed when at least one replica has been started.

You can also add replicas after a task has been created. The Add replicas action creates the specified number of replicas for one annotation job or several selected jobs. Replica jobs can also be deleted when they are no longer needed.

This separates independent annotation passes from the decision to merge results, giving teams more flexibility in organizing annotation and quality review workflows.

Improved performance when working with many objects

The annotation workspace has been optimized for jobs containing thousands of objects.

The Objects sidebar now renders only the list elements needed for the current view, reducing unnecessary browser rendering and improving responsiveness during annotation.

Performance has also been improved when using the brush tool with larger mask segments, and moving or pasting large selections is smoother.

These changes help maintain a more responsive editing experience in annotation-heavy jobs.

Track masks and polygons directly in your browser

The new Mask & Polygon Tracker follows existing mask and polygon annotations across video frames using a model that runs locally in your browser.

Start with an annotated object and run the tracker through annotation actions to extend its annotations across frames. No separate model server or AI agent is needed for this tracker.

The model is downloaded and cached for use in the browser. Performance depends on your device and browser support for WebGPU.

This gives you another way to annotate objects across video frames without setting up a tracking service.

Available in CVAT Online paid plans and CVAT Enterprise.

Use custom text prompts with SAM 3

Text prompts for SAM 3 multi-object segmentation are no longer limited to the selected annotation label’s name.

You can now enter a custom text prompt while keeping your annotation labels unchanged. Click Find to segment matching objects without placing points or drawing a bounding box, or combine the text prompt with visual prompts.

This lets you describe the objects you want SAM 3 to find without changing your project’s labeling taxonomy.

Get more guidance from annotation quality feedback

Immediate job feedback now provides more context when a job is rejected.

The new Top problems section can show up to three hints about recurring annotation discrepancies:

  • Confused classes.
  • Missing annotations.
  • Extra annotations.

Tooltips explain the hints and their possible causes. The hints summarize patterns in the checked portion of the job, helping annotators decide what to review.

Task owners and reviewers can also open task and job confusion matrices directly from scores in quality control tables to inspect the results in more detail.

Available in CVAT Online and CVAT Enterprise.

Clearer AI assistance controls and model setup

The AI assistance interface has been reorganized into Prompting, Auto-labeling, and Tracking tabs, with updated model selection controls.

Model selectors also include an Add your own model documentation link, available even when no models have been configured.

This makes it easier to find the relevant AI-assisted annotation workflow and locate setup instructions for connecting a model.

Other annotation and interface updates

Several smaller changes improve visibility and consistency across annotation and project management:

  • Job stages and states: Icons and colors make it easier to distinguish annotation, validation, and acceptance stages, as well as job statuses.
  • Inherited quality settings: Tasks using project-level quality settings now display the inherited settings and requirements as read-only, with the corresponding requirement columns shown in quality control tables.
  • Point-based quality requirements: The missing overlap threshold setting has been restored.
  • User profiles: Users can now update their primary role from the profile page.

The October releases also include fixes for skeleton-track copying, text-editing shortcut conflicts, email verification errors, and security vulnerabilities.

Updated subscription management and access notices in CVAT Online

CVAT Online’s subscription page has been redesigned, bringing checkout and subscription management into the main CVAT interface.

The updated Solo and Team subscription pages show billing options and annual savings, with a shared team-size selector for Team plans.

New Restricted Mode notices explain which actions are affected when Free personal or organization workspaces exceed applicable task, internal storage, or membership limits. The notices also explain recovery options, such as reducing usage or upgrading the plan.

A separate payment reminder informs users when paid access has expired and explains the Free-plan fallback.
